In 1513,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.keywestexpress.net\/blog\/pirates-and-wenches-and-gold-oh-my\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ponce De Leon<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> discovered Florida, naming it \u201cLa Florida\u201d or \u201cland of flowers.\u201d He also saw this land as an opportune location for transporting silver, gold, and precious gems. In turn, this attracted some of the more noteworthy pirates in history, including<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amli.com\/blog\/black-caesar-floridas-most-mysterious-pirate\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Black Caesar<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Blackbeard, Anne Bonny, Calico Jack, and Jean Lafitte.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Known as Spain\u2019s most experienced admiral of his time,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.maritimeheritage.org\/ports\/usFlorida.html\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don Pedro Menendez<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> set sail to Florida in 1565 with the task of driving out unwanted settlers and pirates. On August 28th, he arrived on Florida\u2019s west coast and established a village known as St. Augustine, merely eleven days later.
